Sergeant Roger Murtaugh

So, the other night, October 29th, Danny Glover came to Northeastern to speak. It was an event hosted by the Haitian Student Union. For those of you living sheltered lives that didn't get the title reference, Danny Glover played Sergeant (and later Captain) Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon movies. Well thats not why he was here. He was here to talk about some of the issues in the world and how they need to be dealt with.

In truth, the only reason I went was because my R.A. asked me to, and seeing how I aspire to be an R.A. myself, I figured doing anything to get on the R.A.'s good side is smart.

Well we get to Blackman Auditorium and find out that not only is it free but we get a free Haitian Student Unity T-shirt. I was pumped cuz i love free stuff and cuz i can now claim to be an honorary member of the Haitian Student Union (which isn't true but I can pretend).

The presentation started with a short video presentation of the movies Danny has been in and then he and some professor (I don't know who) were introduced. It was formatted in a way that the professor would ask a question and Danny would go off on the topic, although he as often as not went off on wild tangents that I didn't follow. I don't actually know if what he had to say was good or not. Alot of the discussion focused on the socio-economic problems faced in Africa, Latin-America, and the Caribbean.... At least, I think thats what he was talking about...

Well, after that there was an open question period. No one seemed sure if they should say anything, but I was prepared with two questions. My R.A. and the two other kids we went with were terrified when I got up cuz earlier as we were coming over, we joked that someone should ask him if Mel Gibson (his Lethal Weapon co-star) hates blacks as much as he hates Jews. We weren't serious of course, but it was a funny idea. Well, I didn't ask him that. I asked him what his favorite scene from filming the Lethal Weapon movies was. He said it was the toilet scene (for those who haven't seen the movies, in Lethal Weapon 2, theres a scene where Glover is sitting on his toilet and then finds out the bad guys put a bomb in it and if he gets up it'll blow up). This also happens to be my favorite scene from the movies as well.

I then asked which presidential nominee he thought could best deal with the issues he discussed. Well, he wouldn't answer that. Oh well.

When I sat back down, one of the kids I went with Darren, said to me, "Dude, you just talked to Danny Glover about Lethal Weapon and his favorite scene is your favorite scene. That was so cool." Well let me tell you, yes it was.

We left shortly after that cuz people were asking questions about you know, real world issues, but we just didn't understand any of it.

But man, it was so cool, cuz I got to talk to Danny Glover about Lethal Weapon...

Sieve, you suck

Thats what we chant from the NU DogHouse when the opposing team's starting goalie is introduced at the start of the beginning of a hockey game. We also chant it whenever he gives up a goal.

Well truth is, the goalie from Providence was really, really good. Of course, so was our goalie.

Final score, 3-2 NU over Providence in OT. This is important because my best friend Sarah and her sister both attend Providence College and thus I now have bragging rights leading up to Jan. 25 and 26 when we next face them.

Well, it was a great game. I went with my friends Adam and Call. We got there early to make sure we had good seats and it was worth it. The game featured great defense on both sides and great goal-keeping. The offense was sadly lacking though. No goals in the first period even though we a had few power plays and so did Providence.

In the second period, Providence struck first. It was a great screen play and our goalie didn't have a chance. Even the greats like Patrick Roy, Tom Barrasso and Dominik Hasek wouldn't have been able to stop it. A few minutes later, we hit an equalizer. We blew quite a few chances though in the period when we didn't score on a bunch of power plays. Also, there was one bullshit play when we had a practically open shot in front of the net but the goalie shoved the net out of place a split second before we scored. No goal, though there was a penalty. Of course, we didn't score on the power play.

Third period. By now, we had so many missed opportunities on power plays and breakaways that we were just praying for a little luck and for our defense to hold. It did, mostly. One good wrist shot from a Providence winger did make it in though. We were pissed of course, cuz we knew we shouldn't be losing but tied at this point. Next thing we know one of the Providence kids is taking a cheap shot at our guy and is hit with a 5 minute major penalty and automatic game misconduct. Thus he was ejected and another player had to sit his 5 minute penalty. Well, we finally took advantage of a power play and scored, over 4 minutes into it, but scored non the less to tie it up. After we had a few more chances to score, but our offense was sadly lacking and nothing materialized.

Overtime. Our offense had gotten lucky on our first two goals. We had only one true good offensive play in the game. Of course, it was the one play that mattered. 44 seconds into OT and we have a breakaway. Every previous one had consisted of us slowing down to try to get the rest of our team involved, which of course, allowed defenders to get there in time to stop us. Well we got it right this time. Our forward had the puck at our blue line with no one near him. Off he went, and this time, didn't slow down, and didn't try to get to close to the goal. From about 5 feet inside the blue line, he flicked off a wrist shot right past the Providence goalie.

We won.

Tomorrow we face North Dakota. Well, I should say, #1 ranked North Dakota. I don't feel good about that. Of course, the Huskies now know that It takes only one good offensive play and a lot of solid defense and goal-tending to win a game.

Go Huskies.

And to the North Dakota goalie, no offense of course but, Sieve, you suck.

The Warren Center

For anyone that doesn't know, it was well below 50 degrees this morning. i woke up at 7:00 AM to get ready to go to the Warren Center in Ashland. it's owned by Northeastern and it was a pretty cool place. There were different ropes courses in the woods that we used for some team building within the Criminal Justice major. Of course, it was sub 50 this morning, and my bus didnt have working heat. I managed to get some sleep on the way up, but needless to say, I was a bit stiff when we arrived. After a quick breakfast we were ready to begin.

We started with some basic ice breakers and then split off into 2 groups. We played some silly games to warm up and then were off. My groups first challenge was to get the entire team to scale a 14 ft. wall, without using anything but our own bodies and of course, once over, you couldnt come back to lift. Well, we were lucky enough to have a few very big kids that got most of us over then somehow managed to lift themselves over. We finished with the last kid jumping up and using another kid who was hanging off the side to pull himself up. we averaged slightly over 3 people a minute, which apparently was very impressive.

We then moved on to a low ropes course where we were split up and had to travel across wires in an attempt to score points. Well once we figured out a system for each one, we flew through and managed a much higher score than the previous team. We then found out our average time on the wall was slightly better than the other team's and it was starting to warm up so we went off for lunch feeling pretty good.

Next came the hard stuff. After lunch we had the high ropes course, which, as you might guess, involved high ropes and lots of harnesses. Me and a few of my friends decided to go for the hardest one, the Giants ladder, mostly cuz that group had the least amount of volunteers. The Giants ladder consisted of four 4 inch thick logs roped together that three people had to climb up and then stand on the top using only a single rope to balance (we had harnesses though). Me and my friends Call and Will managed the best time of the day on it. We don't know how. Some of the other groups were clearly more athletic, strong, taller, and in some cases more experienced with that sorta thing (ROTC kids). We though still dominated. 3 minutes flat, 12 seconds faster than the next best. It was fun knowing that 3 completely average kids (and short in Calls case) we able to pull through like that with simple team work (and my prodigious skills of course). We beat the three ROTC kids by about a minute and a half.

We came back after and I simply crashed. I stayed in bed and played videogames for a few hours. I had no more energy (the earliest I had woken up this year before that was 9 O'clock, and on a weekend it was 11 O'clock).

Even with what felt like a lack of sleep, though I had 7 hours of sleep(almost 8 counting the bus ride), it turned out to be a great, if a bit chilly, day.

College so far

My high school teachers lied to me. Its quite simple really.

Ok, not all of them, but many of them.

They always said how you have to take notes this way, or write like this. I often heard, Corey, if you act this way in college you won't succeed. Well up to this point I've done very well in everything. My tests and papers have been all solid As and Bs. Truth is, I haven't changed anything. I take notes from in class power points, I do my readings (usually), and play videogames late into the night. Ok so theoretically I could be a bit more studious, but that's just not me.

Ok so maybe things will get more challenging as I progress in my education, but for now I stand by my belief that teachers just say stuff to you in school about what college will be like to scare you into doing the meaningless work most teachers assign.

I've lucked out with my roomate as well. Aside from the fact that his girlfriend often calls him at 6 in the morning before she goes to school (hes up cuz he has 8AM classes, I'm not cuz I have 10:30AM classes) I have little to complain about. He's asleep before me, he doesn't brining girls back to a little fun, and he doesn't walk around naked (which apparently has been a problem for some people I know).

things have been pretty good so far, let's see if my luck holds up.
